First we must begin by clearly defining the title of this article. The term English Skills refers to the four skills that are present in almost all languages: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing while the term Language, in pedagogical terms, refers mainly to Grammar and Vocabulary. It is important to distinguish this difference, as these types of skills are very often neglected during the process of learning a foreign language in the traditional education system. The listening ability is the first skill we naturally develop when we learn any language, especially our own mother tongue. As babies we learned to listen first, then later to speak and eventually to read and write. As a result, when learning a second language later in life, we often struggle and find it difficult to adjust to learning methodologies that are based on a grammatical and rigid approach to language because our brains are already wired to learn through language skills. This is often the main reason we face so many difficulties in learning a foreign language and using it effectively.
During my teaching years, I have met multiple adult students and/or parents who have confided in me and told me they understand English, but they cannot speak it. Unfortunately, their school years were spent sitting in a classroom where the primary focus was on Language i.e., Grammar and Vocabulary. Consequently, they were not given the adequate time or environment to practice their English skills i.e., Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. When given the choice, it is paramount to carefully consider an English course which suits your learning needs and preferences. For a complete language learning experience both English Skills lessons and Language lessons must exist in the course with an emphasis on practicing these four skills every lesson.
From a teacher's perspective, helping students to learn as easily as possible, should be one of the main objectives in every lesson. As a teacher, I need to work with the learning patterns already established in the students’ brains and create space for them to naturally use their skills in the lessons. A teacher who can guide students through the learning process in meaningful and interactive lessons that emphasise on the English Skills, will help students become confident and successful communicators in the real world. At Willow Education, students are able to practice these skills thoroughly online, from the comfort of their homes with competent teachers who understand the need to learn English that students can actually use in their daily life.
